Bougainville, Louis-Antoine, count de
(1729-1811)
   navigator
Born in Paris, Louis-Antoine, count de Bougainville studied law and mathematics, then (1754) began a military career. The author of a work on calculus (Traité de calcul intégral, 1749-56), he was made a member of the Royal society in London in recognition of his scholarship. He served as an officer in canada (1756) and later (1763) joined the navy. In 1764, he established a colony in the Falkland Islands, then crossing the Pacific, became the first Frenchman to sail around the world. During that voyage, Bougainville visited Tahiti, samoa, the Solomon Islands, and the New Hebrides. Accompanied by astronomers and naturalists, he made many geographic and scientific discoveries—the flowering tropical vine, Bougainvillea, for example, being named for him. Bougainville published his experiences in his Voyage autour du monde (1771). He was made a founding member (1796) of the Institut de France, and napoléon i made him a senator and count of the empire and also a member of the legion of honor. The largest of the Solomon Islands and a strait there are named for him, as is a channel in vanuatu.
